554 5.2.0 STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception: cannot get ID from name

554 5.2.0 Permanent failure (5xx): the message bounced
By iBlockSpam Team Checked against sources 2 sources How we check our content
What it means

Exchange Online couldn't deliver the message into one recipient's mailbox and gave up with a permanent exception. In the case Microsoft documents, Clutter is turned on for the user but the Clutter folder is missing.

What the bounce says
554 5.2.0 STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:ObjectNotFoundException.MapiExceptionNotFound; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message Cannot get ID from name

The error as quoted in Microsoft's article on this NDR.

What 554 5.2.0 means

Microsoft describes this NDR as one that users receive when they send messages to a specific mailbox in Exchange Online. It notes that people may see it when sending to a distribution group, because the group includes the affected mailbox.

The cause Microsoft gives is narrow: the Clutter feature is enabled for the user, but the Clutter folder is missing from the mailbox. Exchange can't find the folder it expects, so delivery fails with "Cannot get ID from name". Microsoft's workaround is to turn off Clutter for that user, either in Outlook on the web or in Exchange Online PowerShell.

Read the whole line before you act. RFC 3463 defines X.2.0 as "Other or undefined mailbox status": the mailbox exists, but something about it caused the bounce. The text after STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception names the specific exception. Microsoft's article covers the ObjectNotFoundException.MapiExceptionNotFound case with "Cannot get ID from name". If your NDR names a different exception, this workaround may not apply, and the recipient's admin should open a case with Microsoft Support.

For the sender there's nothing to fix. The problem is inside one recipient mailbox, and resending won't help until that mailbox is fixed. Forward the NDR to the recipient through another channel so their admin can act on it.

Likely causes

  • Clutter is enabled for the recipient, but the Clutter folder is missing from the mailbox.
  • Sending to a distribution group that contains the affected mailbox.
  • A different mailbox-side exception named after STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception, which needs its own diagnosis.

How to fix it

If you sent the message

  1. Don't keep resending. Tell the recipient through another channel and include the full NDR.
  2. If you sent to a distribution group, the problem is likely in one member's mailbox rather than the group itself.

If you're the recipient or their admin

  1. In Outlook on the web: Settings > My app settings > Mail > Clutter, clear "Separate items identified as clutter", then Save.
  2. Or in Exchange Online PowerShell: Get-Mailbox user@contoso.com | Set-Clutter -Enable $false (with the user's address).
  3. If the exception text differs from Microsoft's example, open a case with Microsoft Support and include the full NDR.

Frequently asked questions

Does 554 5.2.0 STOREDRV mean the recipient's mailbox is full?

Not in the case Microsoft documents. There, the mailbox has Clutter turned on but its Clutter folder is missing, so delivery fails with "Cannot get ID from name". RFC 3463 gives a full mailbox its own code, X.2.2. This NDR is about a missing folder, not storage.

Why did only one member of a distribution group bounce with 5.2.0?

Because the fault is in that member's mailbox, not the group. Microsoft notes that people may see this NDR when sending to a distribution group. The recipient's admin turns off Clutter for the affected user, and later messages are delivered.
