Barracuda Email Protection alternative: an honest comparison

Barracuda Email Protection bundles sandboxing, link protection, encryption, continuity and more in every plan. iBlockSpam is a focused per-domain MX filter. Here's how they compare on facts checked in October 2026, and which suits whom.

The short answer

Barracuda Email Protection suits organizations that want a broad bundle, with sandboxing, click-time link protection, encryption, an emergency mailbox and 24/7 support, in every plan. iBlockSpam suits small and growing businesses that need inbound MX filtering with a flat, published per-domain price, unlimited mailboxes, per-user digests, free DNS tools and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Competitor details below were checked on Barracuda's own pages and documentation in October 2026.

What it costs at 10 and 50 mailboxes

Assumptions: one domain, published prices only, USD, excluding tax.

Item 10 mailboxes 50 mailboxes
Barracuda Email Protection Quote only (per-user list price with minimums; get the figure from Barracuda) Quote only
iBlockSpam Protect, annual $12/month ($144/year) $12/month ($144/year)
iBlockSpam Protect Plus, annual $19/month ($228/year) $19/month ($228/year)
iBlockSpam Protect, month-to-month $15/month $15/month

Barracuda does publish a per-user list price, but it loads inside the page and we couldn't read a reliable figure, so we've marked it quote only rather than guess. When you price it, multiply by your user count or the minimum, whichever is higher, and remember the Barracuda bundle includes sandboxing, link protection, encryption and an emergency mailbox that iBlockSpam doesn't.

When Barracuda is the better choice

  • You want advanced threat protection in the base plan. Barracuda's plans list click-time link protection, attachment sandboxing and QR code protection in every tier.
  • Your users must keep working during an outage. Barracuda's emergency mailbox lets them send and receive while your server is down. iBlockSpam holds mail but doesn't give users a mailbox in the meantime.
  • You need encryption, DLP, backup or archiving from the same vendor.
  • You want 24/7 live human support included in every plan.
  • You want to try it first. Barracuda offers a 14-day free trial; iBlockSpam doesn't offer a trial.

When iBlockSpam is the better choice

  • You want the price before you talk to anyone. Our pricing page shows per-domain prices and limits in plain HTML.
  • You're a small team below a vendor minimum. iBlockSpam has no mailbox minimum; one domain is one subscription.
  • You have many mailboxes or aliases. Unlimited mailboxes and domain aliases, with 100,000 inbound messages a month per domain.
  • You want a slightly longer hold during outages. Inbound mail is spooled for up to 5 days; see outage spooling.
  • You want free tools that check your DNS without a sign-up. Start with the Email Health Check or the blacklist checker.
  • You want a refund window. A domain's first annual subscription has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to switch from Barracuda

  1. Note what you'll replace elsewhere, such as encryption, archiving or backup, before you cancel anything.
  2. Export your sender policies and allow and block lists from Barracuda.
  3. Save your current DNS with the Email Health Check and lower the MX TTL a day or two ahead.
  4. Add your domain in iBlockSpam and follow the guided setup for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or your server.
  5. If your platform only accepts inbound mail from Barracuda's IP ranges, update that rule before changing MX.
  6. Change MX, test with the Email Header Analyzer, and keep Barracuda running until the old TTL has passed and no new mail arrives there.

Our migration plan covers each step and the rollback, and switching spam filter providers explains the common pitfalls.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Barracuda's Email Continuity stay on during an outage?

Barracuda's Email Gateway Defense documentation says Email Continuity is automatically disabled after 96 hours. During that time users can send and receive from an emergency mailbox. iBlockSpam holds inbound mail for up to 5 days and delivers it when your server is back, but doesn't offer an emergency mailbox.

Does Barracuda have a minimum number of users?

Barracuda's pricing page, checked in October 2026, says "Minimums apply" to its published per-user list price but doesn't state the minimum in the page text. Ask Barracuda or a partner for the figure that applies to you. iBlockSpam is priced per domain with no mailbox minimum.

What does iBlockSpam not do that Barracuda does?

iBlockSpam doesn't rewrite links, sandbox attachments, encrypt mail, archive beyond 30 days of message history, back up Microsoft 365, or offer an emergency mailbox. Barracuda's plans page lists link protection, sandboxing, encryption and continuity in all plans, with backup and archiving in higher plans.

Can users choose how often they get Barracuda quarantine emails?

Barracuda's documentation says administrators can set the notification interval for all users or let users set their own, for example hourly or weekly. iBlockSpam digests can be hourly, daily, on a chosen weekday or on a custom schedule, and every user has a personal quarantine.
